Co-Detection Detex Interview with Olaf Literski

detex by Bilfinger GREYLOGIX foodtec sets new standards

With detex Bilfinger GREYLOGIX foodtec developed a CO detection system for spray drying processes which sets new standards in the area of early fire detection and safety in terms of dust explosions for spray towers.

By now, the early fire detection system detex by Bilfinger GREYLOGIX has been on the market for 3 years and its success story goes on. The team around Olaf Literski, who has more than 17 years of experience in this area, is happy the system got accepted that well by customers: „In the beginning we wouldn’t have thought that we could be that successful that fast, but it was about time to develop the old systems further; technology came to a hold for a long time.“ (Olaf Literski)

The steadily growing detex team is looking forward to more successful years to keep setting standards in terms of safety.

Interview by Deutsche Molkerei Zeitung with Olaf Literski

dmz: What is special about detex?
Literski: detex means carbon monoxide detection by Bilfinger GREYLOGIX. Special about the detex CO detection is its dual-channel analyzer which makes sure the detex can permanently compare the two main airflows. So far, this task was carried out by competitors with one-channel analyzers which didn’t allow to draw any conclusions about perturbing effects.

dmz: What is the technique used for detex?
Literski: The evaluation of the very little carbon monoxide concentrations which can occur in the drying process is carried out with the NDIR method within the measuring cell of the analyzer. Here, NDIR means nondispersive infrared absorption which means that the measuring cell displays the CO concentration in the measuring gas through the dimension of the electro-optical absorption of a specific wavelength (here CO).

dmz: What are the most important components of detex?
Literski: The steady exhaust air filter, the special measuring gas treatment and the evaluation system with the analyzer build the centerpiece of the detex CO detection. Besides, the service-friendly switchgear cabinet implementation of our own production and the high availability of the system proved successful during the last years.

dmz: How is detex built?
Literski:
The detex control system is installed in a standard enclosure which can be easily integrated into the customer’s existing switchgear cabinet concept. Due to the service-friendly installation the entry is only necessary through the double front door. In the switchgear cabinet the measuring gas treatment is carried out separately from the evaluation, so that mechanics and electronics are working separated from each other and don’t have a negative influence.

dmz: How important is the adjustment of detex for a safe functionality?
Literski:
All adjustments depend on the product and the process and have to be made individually for each customer system. With experiments in the 1980s thresholds for skim milk powder were ascertained which partly are used nowadays as the only basis for the adjustment of an early fire detection. These thresholds are by no means current and should only be determined by specialized and qualified personnel with longtime experience in this area and in close consultation with the respective officials.

dmz: Where does the team safety technology make a difference?
Literski: The team is an important part of our daily work with safety in the spray drying process. Every member supplies its latest information about this topic and takes care that everyone can keep working on a high level and that everyone can improve. Our team is on hand with help and advice for the customer with its wide range of knowledge and experience.

dmz: To what extent can one appeal on experience here?
Literski: Experience is highly important in this area. Not every supplier of e.g. early fire detection systems has enough experience with the huge differences between product and process impacts. In my case I can draw on 17 years of experience with CO detection and the spray drying process. This experience is valued a lot by the customer as well as by the officials and reflects the importance of the close collaboration.

dmz: Last but not least, what distinguishes Bilfinger GREYLOGIX foodtec?
Literski: What distinguishes us is our typical mid tier thinking with a high customer orientation and of cause knowledge of processes. Since Bilfinger GREYLOGIX is active in a lot of sectors we can provide overarching solutions. Furthermore, we are independent of manufacturers. From consulting over technical documentation and the Industrial IT to plant engineering and the after sales service we offer everything from a single source. This way, we can offer ideal solutions for the complex problems of our customers.

dmz: Mister Literski, thank you very much for the conversation, we wish you good luck!!
